* United States Masters bowling champion, DeeRonn Booker of Albuquerque returned to local lanes at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho last week to win his way into the New Mexico Open tournament there August 16-18.

Trailing early leader Brian Skidmore by 41 pins with two games to go, Booker caught up 25 with a 237 fifth game to Skidmore’s 212

Then, with an exciting down-to-the wire 246, he won by three pins following Skidmore’s gallant 227 finish; final six-game totals 1,431 to 1,428.

Upcoming qualifiers at Tenpins & More are scheduled Saturday July 13, Sunday July 28 and Sunday August 11.

Nine states are so far represented in the 20th annual “bowlfest”, including, other than New Mexico, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Utah, Colorado and Nevada.

Thirty-three local and national sponsors are also on board that will help swell prize-money to a record
$ 76,000, with first prize of $ 13,500 being awarded to the winner from a starting field expected to be more than 200 from all over the US.

* There will be fireworks of a different kind on Thursday July 4 when thirty-six men, women and youth bowlers take to the lanes for the 13th Summer Masters finals at Tenpins & More.

The tournament is part of the Summer Games which concluded last weekend with more than 140 players trying to win titles in teams of four, doubles and singles events, between them offering over
$ 3,400 in prizes.
