* One hundred and forty-two entries later, forty bowlers have made the finals for the 23rd annual “Champion of Champions” tournament at Tenpins & More.
Over the next three Sundays (starting January 7) these bowlers will play match-play against one another in separate divisions for men, women, seniors and youth for prize-money in excess of $ 5,100.
Gil Chavez qualified first in men’s action finishing off with a 278 game to top J D Nance by three pins, after Nance closed with 253.
Defending champion, Jon Arevalo included games of 243, 237, 248 and 231 in sixth. Low to cut in 14th place was 1,448/6 in the handicap-added event.
Karen Coffey took over the women’s lead after shooting back-to-back 236 and 233 ahead of early leader Jeanne Carver and improving Wendy Pase.
Larry Martinez fired a personal best 201, 226, 222, 207, 235 and 219, from an entering league average of 185 to lead seniors, in front of Espanola’s Kenneth Friedrich and Willie Edwards. Chavez also qualified for the senior final, in fourth place.
Brothers Andrew and L J Zubia drove in from Amarillo and finished one and three in the youth section, with Rio Rancho’s Carson Belnap nestled in second place.
Belnap’s sister Kylie was fourth while dad Kyle tied for the last spot in the men’s final.
It’s a fresh start in the championship round. Men bowl 14 games, women seven, seniors nine and youth eight with bonus pins added for winning matches.
Eleven of the forty will split the prize-money.
